What Color Are You?
I was browsing through Classifieds today and stumbled upon a job recruitment ad which I was curious about. The only thing that dread me to know more about it was I'm only allowed to call the number given. FYI,I dont and I hate to call for jobs, I always feel that sending your CVs and resumes is the better high standard way. So I thought I'll give it a try in calling, and instead of providing me with details of the job scope, she questioned me on my race. GODDAMMIT! Heres how the conversation went:
Me: Hi, I'm Syahida and I called regarding the job recruitment ad.
She: Ohh...err...Are you 21? Do you have a diploma? Do you speak mandarin?
Me:(My response was YES for all she asked)
She: Wait, what did you say your name was?
Me: Syahida.
She: Oh you're a malay huh? And you speak mandarin? (in a "are-you-sure-you-can-speak-mandarin tone)
Me: Yep. Mandarin is my second language in school.
She: What's your race?
Me: Malay? Im born with mixed malay and chinese.
She: Oh...so still a malay la! And you speak mandarin? (that same tone again)
Me: Yes! Is that a problem? What's the matter? Is this a racist organisation? Ermm...Malay cannot marry chinese issit? Malay cannot speak mandarin issit?
She: *kept mum for a minute* ok. Let me get back to you.
Me: No thanks! I dont provide for such an organisation.
Goodness! I was so pissed with her tone and she is so not sensitive with the word "malay"! What the hell is happening? For a malay like me who studied mandarin since kindergarten couldn even convince a chinese employer, what more a malay who could only speak malay and english? This is so unfair to the society. If every employer is like that, all malays will have no job. Why? Cause you're not bilingual in mandarin. What logic? Si bei wu liao! ZHEN WU LIAO AR!
